AGDS:CellO - Microbiome Study
Continue helping us understand how the gut microbiome may influence depression and response to antidepressant treatment.
About the Study
What is the purpose of the research?
Emerging science suggests that the gut microbiome – the trillions of microorganisms living in our digestive system – may play a key role in mental health and how people respond to antidepressant treatment. Differences in microbial activity and metabolite production could be linked to the severity of conditions like depression, opening the door to more personalised, effective treatments in the future.
This study builds on your previous contribution by asking participants to provide a stool sample. By analysing these samples using advanced genomic techniques, our research team will build a detailed gut microbiome profile for each participant and compare these profiles across the study group. This will help us understand:
- How the gut microbiome interacts with antidepressant medications
- How it may differ between people with different treatment responses
- How diet and gastrointestinal health relate to antidepressant use
What does participation look like?
| Step 1 (10 mins) – Read and Sign Participant Information Consent form |
![]() | Step 2 (20 – 30 mins) – Collect stool sample in the privacy of your own home and complete Collection Form |
![]() | Step 3 (10 mins) – Post you stool sample in the packaging provided |
![]() | Step 4 (15 mins) – Complete online Questionnaire |
Your contribution matters
Every sample helps researchers better understand why antidepressants work differently for different people.
The knowledge gained from this research may contribute to more personalised approaches to depression treatment in the future.
Project Update
Please find attached the latest newsletter, which includes updates and insights from the project to date. We hope you find it informative and engaging.
👥 Healthy Volunteers (Coming Soon)
We will be inviting individuals who have not been diagnosed with nor ever received treatment for depression or bipolar disorder to take part as control participants in the AGDS-CellO
Control participants play a vital role by providing comparison data that helps researchers identify meaningful patterns and differences between those who have experienced depression and those who haven’t. Your participation would involve completing questionnaires about your health and background, provide a blood and stool sample. If you’re interested, we’d be happy to share more details about what participation involves. If you are interested, email cello@uq.edu.au with:
- Your name
- Your contact number
- A short message saying you are interested
We would love to hear from you!
